The answer first

Start here

Compare routes to the station you actually need.

A ¥1,500 bus to Tokyo Station still leaves another journey if the hotel is in Shinjuku. Include that final leg when comparing it with a direct train.

Choose the arrival station from your hotel address

From Haneda, ordinary Keikyu or Monorail trains are a lower-cost choice for a daytime arrival if you can manage a transfer with your luggage. From Narita, selected N’EX trains remove a transfer for Shinjuku or Shibuya, while Skyliner is useful for Ueno. For a hotel near Tokyo Station, compare N’EX and TYO-NRT by fare, seating and where you get off.

Skyliner to Keisei-Ueno costs ¥2,580 with the ordinary paper-ticket combination, or ¥2,567 with a ¥1,267 IC basic fare plus a ¥1,300 liner ticket. All seats are reserved, so tapping an IC card alone is not enough. Keisei-Ueno is separate from JR Ueno: check the remaining route to your hotel. N’EX Ordinary Class to Shibuya costs ¥3,330, the same as Shinjuku, but leaves a different final journey.

For Ginza or Asakusa, consider Keikyu–Toei Asakusa through trains or Narita’s Access Express, a commuter train without a liner surcharge. Higashi-Ginza and Ginza are different stations, and departures have different destinations. Check the stop list against your hotel address and look up that journey’s fare separately from the Tokyo Station and Shinjuku examples below.

Haneda T3 to Shinjuku, step by step

At Haneda T3, use the Keikyu gates for downtown Tokyo/Yokohama on the 2F arrivals level, rather than the B2 gates towards T1/T2. Rail access from T1/T2 is on B1. Have enough IC balance, or select a language at the ticket machine and find your destination through the JR-via-Shinagawa option or station search. The relevant Keikyu ordinary-ticket machines accept cash and credit cards.

At Shinagawa, follow the JR transfer signs and change for Shinjuku. With paper tickets, buy the through journey at the start or obtain the JR leg separately at Shinagawa. With IC, continue on the same card. A Metro-only pass or bank-card Tap to Ride that excludes JR cannot cover the whole journey. These are ordinary commuter trains without individually reserved seats.

For a bus, buy a ticket for your departure at the airport and use the stand shown on it. Keio Department Store by the West Exit, Busta Shinjuku to the south and individual hotel stops are separate destinations; not every bus serves every hotel. A departure that stops near your hotel can save a rail transfer with your bags.

Narita: sort out the seat and luggage

Use Narita Airport Station for T1 and Airport Terminal 2 Station for T2/T3. T3 has no railway station. From T3 arrivals, take North Exit 1 for the free T2 shuttle or North Exit 2 for the walking route, then continue to the railway gates on B1. Use JR counters or machines for N’EX and Keisei for Skyliner.

For N’EX to Shinjuku, choose your train, destination and seat at a JR counter or reserved-seat machine. You need both the basic fare and limited-express ticket. A seat-unspecified limited-express ticket costs the same but can leave you standing if no seat is free. Reserve the seat when sitting matters.

The large-luggage areas have dial locks and are first-come, with no separate booking. Reserving a seat does not secure a baggage space. Regular TYO-NRT buses offer a lower-cost journey to Tokyo Station. Buy the departure at the terminal counter and reach the stand at least five minutes before departure. Seats are unassigned.

For the Tokyo Station area

From Haneda T3, Keikyu via Shinagawa and JR to Tokyo Station costs ¥540 by paper ticket or ¥536 by IC; Keikyu gives 20 minutes. Monorail via Hamamatsucho and JR costs ¥720 by ticket, with the airport estimating about 30 minutes. These estimates come from different providers. Check your departure and transfer before planning an arrival time.

From Narita, N’EX to Tokyo Station costs ¥3,140, with a fastest journey of 53 minutes. A regular TYO-NRT bus costs ¥1,500; the route’s fastest 65-minute figure may differ from your airport departure. Skyliner via Nippori and JR totals ¥2,780 by ticket or ¥2,766 by IC. Check the actual connection, allowing time to change at Nippori.

For a base in Shinjuku

From Haneda T3, Keikyu and JR to Shinjuku cost ¥590 by ticket or ¥580 by IC, with Keikyu giving 30 minutes. The West Exit bus costs ¥1,400; traffic can lengthen the airport’s estimate of about 35 minutes. From Narita, a Shinjuku-bound N’EX costs ¥3,330 in an Ordinary reserved seat. Tokyo’s official visitor guide allows about 90 minutes for the train journey. Add immigration, waiting for the train and the route from Shinjuku Station to your hotel.

The rail platforms, West Exit bus stops and Busta Shinjuku are in different places. Compare the route from your actual arrival stop to the hotel entrance. The Shinjuku field guide explains Busta’s floors.

Returning to Narita within 14 days

The N’EX TOKYO Round Trip Ticket costs ¥5,200 for adults holding a non-Japanese passport. It covers one journey from Narita to the Tokyo area and one return within 14 days. If you use both, it saves ¥1,080 against regular Tokyo Station return fares or ¥1,460 for Shinjuku. If you will leave from another airport or use only one leg, compare it with a one-way ticket instead.

Late arrivals and luggage

The final overnight TYO-NRT bus leaves from T3 stand 5 at 23:20, T2 stand 6 at 23:25 and T1 stand 7 at 23:30, due at Tokyo Station’s Nihombashi Exit at 00:38. This starred service costs ¥3,000 per adult. Go directly to the stand and pay on board with cash or transport IC; credit cards are not accepted. Arrange the late-night journey from Tokyo Station to your hotel as well.

Allow for immigration, baggage collection and waiting at the station. A scheduled landing time cannot guarantee the last bus or train. Check the timetable and final connection for your date, with an alternative that you can use if delayed.

Fixed taxi tariffs to Chiyoda are ¥7,600 from Haneda or ¥9,000 at night, and ¥26,000 from Narita or ¥30,000 at night. The night period is 22:00–05:00, with tolls extra. Check the reservation requirement for Narita. Look up the applicable destination tariff for Shinjuku rather than using these Chiyoda figures.
