TokyoGuideChoosing a base
The neighbourhood you return to
Choose your repeated journeys before the hotel.
Shinjuku’s two sides, Ueno’s two stations and Tokyo’s opposite faces change the approach to a hotel. Compare actual destinations and family/evening plans before choosing the entrance you will return to.

For western plans and many rail choices. Check the station, gate and final return before the hotel name. Park Hyatt is a separate paid stay/dining choice.

Stay on the side of the destinations you will return to.
The first airport trip matters, but repeated evening returns and the actual luggage route shape the rest of the stay.
Reading five bases
Shinjuku
The west suits TMG, Cocoon and walks among office towers; the east places Isetan, Kinokuniya and Suehirotei near shopping/performance plans. The south serves Busta and NEWoMan arrivals. A useful base for repeated Shinjuku evenings, though a western hotel can mean crossing the station for eastern appointments. Choose the side you will actually use.

Ueno
Compare Ueno for repeated Tokyo National Museum/National Museum of Western Art days, time in the park and Ameyoko to the south. It also suits a family alternating museums with outdoor breaks. Each museum has its own tickets and closures. Skyliner arrives at Keisei-Ueno, distinct from JR Ueno: identify which station a “station-side” hotel actually faces.

Tokyo Station
A strong candidate for an onward shinkansen morning and Marunouchi appointments. The red-brick building/Marunouchi west side and Yaesu east side give different approaches. N’EX and TYO-NRT also arrive at rail platforms and a bus stop respectively. Weigh that onward convenience against repeated returns if most evenings are in Shinjuku or Shibuya.

Shibuya
Shibuya becomes a specific choice for PARCO fashion/design and games, a WWW show and record bars, with Harajuku/Omotesando days nearby. The scramble, Sakuragaoka and Yoyogi Park sides are different locations. Check the actual address, direction and gradients rather than treating every Shibuya-named hotel as a station-side base.

Ginza
Ginza suits long visits to department stores, galleries and Kabukiza, with dinner and a return within the same area. Compare airport access through the station that matches the address: Ginza, Higashi-Ginza or Yurakucho. A shopping district’s reputation does not price its rooms; compare identical dates, occupancy, room and meal conditions across bases.

A museum family and a return after a show
For a family with two museum days, start by relating park, exhibitions and accommodation in Ueno. Check children’s ages, actual beds, bathtub and the exit usable with a pushchair. Museum proximity does not guarantee a family room or quietness, but it matters when the day includes returning to the room.
For two travellers with four Shinjuku evenings, compare an eastern/Shinjuku-sanchome return with a Tokyo Station base. Four Tokyo–Shinjuku round trips on the published Marunouchi example total ¥1,672 and 144 minutes on trains per adult; ¥3,344 for two, excluding walks and waits. Put that repeated cost and return route beside the room-price difference.

Three checks before booking
First, list your repeated destinations and check real routes. Second, connect the airport terminus or stop to the side where the accommodation sits. Third, check the last train on your latest evening and the remaining walk to the entrance.
If luggage or mobility needs require avoiding steps, “has a lift” is insufficient. You need a continuous platform-to-accommodation path. Ask the property you book for the specific route.
Read whether the price is per room or per person. Match adults, children’s ages, beds, breakfast and cancellation terms, then check consumption tax, service and accommodation tax. Compare the final price of the room you need alongside the journey home each day, rather than ranking neighbourhoods by reputation.
Rooms, street and meals at all day place
Double and Medium Double have different floor areas. Use the full place article to compare beds, baths and street-level dining. Read the place article.
After choosing Shinjuku
Separate a western high-rise walk from an eastern shopping or performance day to reduce repeated station crossings. Busta separates arrival and departure floors; NEWoMan includes areas inside and outside the gates. With your base fixed, use the field guide’s relationships to shape a day.
