DESIGN + OBJECTS

A watercolour kit, two rice wrappers around azuki and media art exploring signal and movement: separate product, material and mechanism to turn a design interest into a choice.

Walks through this lens

Walking times are estimates from OpenStreetMap’s surface street network at 80 m/min. They exclude underpasses, decks, station concourses, signal waits, slopes and movement inside buildings. Straight-line links are not walking routes; follow on-site signs even where a time is shown. Shaded quarters show the approximate areas around FOW’s selected places.

DESIGN + OBJECTS

Sekaido Shinjuku Main Store

Pens, paper, paint and framing occupy different floors; a watercolour begins with choices about paper texture, water and pigment.

Continue with this place ↗

Choose Sekaido for paper and tools, Kinokuniya for shelves around an interest, or Isetan for how finished objects are selected. Ask what criterion you learned, whether or not you buy.

Objects for making

For a first watercolour kit at Sekaido, start with how paint, paper and brush work together. A Pentel Vistage brush stores water in its barrel; Maruman Vifart paper offers surface and sizing choices that affect water and pigment. An online example combines W 401 twelve-colour 5 ml paints at ¥2,376, an FRH-M brush at ¥308 and B 5 S 208V paper at ¥971: ¥3,655 before extras such as a palette. This is not a branch-price guarantee. Continue the interest at Kinokuniya’s 5F art shelves. An art book with large spreads asks for different looking, carrying and storage from a small paperback.

How material remains in the finished object

Two small Suzukake sweets at Isetan make material easy to compare. Suzu-no-Monaka uses a crisp Niigata Koganemochi-rice shell; Suzu-no-Enmochi has an elastic Saga Hiyokumochi-rice wrapper. Both contain Tokachi azuki. At a listed ¥128 each, ¥256 buys the contrast. At NEWo Man, ARTIDA OUD shifts the question to metal and stone. Its elafonisi bicolour-tourmaline ring combines silver 925, 18K gold plating, dark rhodium and small diamonds set in Jaipur. The brand-listed ¥45,100 design cannot be resized, making fit a decision before colour. Branch stock remains separate for both examples.

Go to Hatsudai for the mechanism

In Juggler, presented at ICC in 2026, strobes isolate moments in Juggler’s rotating physical sculptures to create a transformation. The object of attention is the combination of light and time. YoungEun Kim’s old song recording, presented that year, asks what noise removal preserves and destroys. Choose ICC towards Hatsudai when you want time with an exhibition, or southern Shinjuku’s NEWo Man to choose one item in transit. NEWo Man Ekinaka is inside the paid gates, while Ekisoto, the Food Hall and fashion areas are outside; the outside shops make the workable choice while waiting for a bus.

At NEWoMan, which shops you can reach depends on which side of the fare gates you are.
