Move from paint on paper to illustrated pages and rice-based sweets, then into a garden. Limiting purchases at the three shops leaves daylight for Gyoen.

Five lenses on both sides of the station
A vertical campus, a roofed plaza, a free observatory and a paid hotel seat: western Shinjuku changes through the use of ground and interiors as much as through tower height.

Walking times are estimates from OpenStreetMap’s surface street network at 80 m/min. They exclude underpasses, decks, station concourses, signal waits, slopes and movement inside buildings. Straight-line links are not walking routes; follow on-site signs even where a time is shown. Shaded quarters show the approximate areas around FOW’s selected places.
If shopping runs long, shorten the garden or move it to another day. Enter Gyoen by the Shinjuku Gate.
If Gyoen is closed or last entry is missed, move it to another day. If shopping expands, recheck the day’s cutoff before reducing the garden time.
At 10:20, begin with paper and brush
This example starts at Sekaido. For watercolour, choose between smooth and rough Vifart paper and a Vistage brush that stores water in its barrel. Leave 30–45 minutes to match paper, brush and paint, with extra time for payment and wrapping. At Kinokuniya, narrow the purpose to 5F art or 7F foreign-language shelves. An art book with large spreads and a small paperback differ in how you look, carry and store them. Choose a reading language and the use you will take home. Allow another 30–45 minutes for a particular book.
One department-store floor
At Isetan, choose one material rather than begin another large shopping session. Suzukake’s monaka and enmochi turn rice from Niigata and Saga into crisp and elastic wrappers around azuki. At ¥128 each, the two offer a small ¥256 comparison. For homeware, use 5F to consider dimensions and material. Leave 30–45 minutes here while protecting enough time for the garden. If shopping grows, end at Isetan and give Gyoen another day instead of compressing the garden.
Aim for an early-afternoon garden
With room for travel and lunch, aim for Shinjuku Gate around 13:00. Ordinary adult garden admission is ¥500, separate from shopping and food, and the observations do not require buying anything. In 60 minutes, choose among the four plane-tree rows and roses of the formal garden, the landscape lawns and the Japanese garden’s ponds. Leave 90–120 minutes to include the greenhouse and former Goryotei. Last entry is 16:00 from 1 October to 14 March; do not plan to reach the gate at the cutoff. Move the garden visit when its closure or special booking conditions do not fit.
Walk to the next entrance
Open the walking links in Sources in order: Sekaido main store to Kinokuniya main store, Kinokuniya to Isetan, and Isetan to Gyoen’s Shinjuku Gate. After Isetan, choose the walking map’s Shinjuku-dori approach to Shinjuku Gate. The last destination is the admission gate, not the centre of the garden. After paying at Isetan, check the approach to that gate and leave enough time before last entry.
