From the high city to the ground

Move from the Cocoon’s campus lattice to individual paintings, then to the city below TMG and the ground of Chuo Park. Museum admission depends on the exhibition; hotel tea is a separate finish.

Lenses on this walk

Walking times are estimates from OpenStreetMap’s surface street network at 80 m/min. They exclude underpasses, decks, station concourses, signal waits, slopes and movement inside buildings. Straight-line links are not walking routes; follow on-site signs even where a time is shown. Shaded quarters show the approximate areas around FOW’s selected places.

On foot

Check museum and observatory closed days separately. Continue to Park Hyatt only after noon for paid dining; afternoon tea booking is recommended. Bar service at The Peak Lounge & Bar from 17:00 is for ages 20+ and takes no reservations.

From a narrow campus base to individual pictures

At the Cocoon, begin with the narrow base, the widening volume of classrooms and the white diagonal lattice. The vertical campus brings fashion, IT and medical schools into one building while leaving greenery and open ground below. Allow 15–20 minutes for the exterior; school interiors are outside this walk. At SOMPO, exchange the large outline for time with individual pictures. Look at colour and surface within one picture, whether a temporary-exhibition work or the brushwork of the collection’s Sunflowers. Choose from the guide to works actually on view and allow 60–90 minutes.

From a picture to the breadth of the city

At TMG, turn from the surface of a picture to the breadth of a real city. Find Park Tower and Opera City to the southwest to locate the western district below. Mount Fuji to the west depends on visibility; the green areas of Shinjuku Gyoen and Meiji Jingu to the southeast still help explain how open land sits within the city. Allow 30–45 minutes in the observatory, plus any lift queue. This is a workable short finish. For the fuller walk, descend to Chuo Park and spend another 20–30 minutes around Shinjuku Niagara Falls, Shiraito Falls and the SHUKNOVA terrace, where the spaces beneath the towers come back to human scale.

Finish in the park, or add a seated afternoon

SOMPO is the core walk’s paid visit, with admission set by the chosen exhibition. The Cocoon exterior, TMG observatory and park are free; transport and meals are extra. Park Hyatt is an option for spending longer seated high above the city. For Peak Lounge tea, budget in the low tens of thousands of yen per person including service and check the selected menu’s inclusions. Reserve a slot between 12:00 and 17:00 and allow about 90 minutes. For the bar, plan separately around its 17:00 opening and age minimum of 20. A morning walk need not turn into a long wait for the bar.

A shorter walk when a stop is unavailable

If the museum is closed, continue from the Cocoon to TMG and the park; omit the panorama if both observatories are closed or the queue is too long for your day. Neither shortened version includes the missing exhibition or view. When omitting SOMPO, open the Cocoon-to-TMG walking link below. At TMG, approach the dedicated observatory lift on floor 1 of the No.1 Building; use the floor 1 main entrance on weekends and public holidays when the floor 2 entrances close.

Walk to the next entrance

Open the leg-by-leg walking links in Sources: Cocoon to SOMPO, SOMPO to TMG No.1 Building, and TMG to SHUKNOVA. At TMG, find the floor 1 observatory-lift entrance rather than stop at a building-centre pin. If you booked tea after the park, use SHUKNOVA to Park Hyatt, then enter the hotel on floor 2 and continue to 41.
