Shinjuku / LENS

THE VERTICAL WEST

A vertical campus, a roofed plaza, a free observatory and a paid hotel seat: western Shinjuku changes through the use of ground and interiors as much as through tower height.

WHY · Eye level

The same west side reads differently from each height.

Walks through this lens

Walking times are estimates from OpenStreetMap’s surface street network at 80 m/min. They exclude underpasses, decks, station concourses, signal waits, slopes and movement inside buildings. Straight-line links are not walking routes; follow on-site signs even where a time is shown. Shaded quarters show the approximate areas around FOW’s selected places.

THE VERTICAL WEST

Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building Observatories

A free panorama connecting Skytree, Gyoen and Park Tower with Tange’s civic complex, its plaza and Chuo Park.

Choose two or three buildings and change scale at least once. This is not a plan to enter all six.

What the towers leave at ground level

The Cocoon gathers fashion, IT and medical schools into a narrow base and widening classroom floors, leaving greenery and open ground below. Read the white diagonal lattice together with that shape. Sumitomo’s Sankaku Hiroba makes a different move: a large roof over the ground. Its roughly 25-metre-high, column-free glass-and-steel space turns a plaza once difficult to use in wind and rain into an event setting. One building frees the ground; the other covers it. This pair offers an architectural visit without going to a tower’s top.

Between a city view and one painting

At TMG’s free observatory, locate Park Tower and Opera City southwest, and Gyoen and Meiji Jingu southeast. Return to ground in Chuo Park around Niagara and Shiraito Falls and SHUKNOVA. For closer attention, choose from SOMPO’s collection and temporary exhibitions. Brushwork such as the thick paint of Sunflowers gives a different scale of looking; check which works are on view. A broad panorama and a painted surface ask for different kinds of time.

When to pay for a seat above the city

At Park Hyatt’s Peak Lounge, the purchase is time seated beneath glass and bamboo with tea. For tea, budget in the low tens of thousands of yen per person including service and check the selected menu’s inclusions. Choose TMG when the panorama is the point, or the hotel when you want a longer seated food-and-drink experience. Reserve tea between 12:00 and 17:00; bar service is a separate choice from 17:00 for ages 20 and over. Choose one exterior and either a view or exhibition, then finish in the park or over tea rather than entering all six places.

Check museum and observatory closures separately. Cocoon school floors are closed to general sightseeing; basement Book1st is a separate public bookshop. Hotel tea and bar visits have paid-use, time and age conditions.
