Iseya Shokudo

A market diner founded in 1951, with ginger pork, the day’s fish and house rice-bran pickles assembled into a morning meal.

Visit fitEarly risers · travellers wanting a substantial rice-set breakfast

A working-market morning adds another rhythm to Shinjuku. Choose a rice set around ginger pork or the day’s fish and vegetables in a small dining room.

Good to know

Come for the restaurant, not a market tour. Go directly from the south gate and choose sides and rice size from that day’s menu.

Belly or loin for a first order

Iseya’s signature ginger pork combines the meat with ginger and spring onion for a rice meal. Belly offers the fattier cut; loin uses the same ginger seasoning with less fat. Choose belly for that richer cut or loin for leaner meat. The dish and set add-on are priced separately: ¥1,000 plus ¥400 makes a ¥1,400 belly set; ¥1,100 plus ¥400 makes a ¥1,500 loin set. Add ¥250 pickled tomato to the belly set for ¥1,650, all tax included. It gives the ginger-and-pork meal a tart accompaniment.

The market’s changing side dishes

Founded in 1951, the diner buys Japanese vegetables at the market and puts seasonal fish selected by the proprietor on the day’s menu. Beyond pork, it lists simmered meat and tofu at ¥900 and fried eggs at ¥500 before the set add-on. House nukazuke—vegetables or fruit pickled in rice bran—comes with set meals. Use the day’s board for fish and vegetables. Some dishes also have named days: curry on Monday, ramen Thursday–Saturday, and tuna sashimi Friday.

Entering a diner inside a working market

This is a Kita-Shinjuku morning destination near Okubo, rather than the next block after Shinjuku’s evening streets. Enter the market’s south gate and follow the approach beside the Tokyo office building on the railway side. It remains a working site with large vehicles; keep the visit to the restaurant rather than adding market wandering or photography. When busy, sign the sheet on the right and wait in the yellow area. Three four-seat tables and four two-seat tables make 20 seats. Reservations are only through the linked Tabelog page, not by phone or at the counter. Plan around 05:00 opening, 14:00 last order and the market closure calendar.
