Shinjuku Golden Gai
Small rooms in low timber buildings carry different drinks and cultures; choose an actual bar, from Kouro’s jukebox to Albatross G on Fifth Street.

About 280 bars line six lanes. It grew out of a 1947 black market, became a bar quarter after 1958 and a hangout for writers and filmmakers. Most bars seat five or six in low wooden rowhouses.
The width of the lanes, the height of the upstairs windows, the different size of every door. The lanes are private roads: no photos without permission.

Golden Gai gathers small bars along six narrow lanes. The film, theatre, literary and art conversations associated with the area around 1970 continue through the interests of individual owners and regulars. A room for music, a gallery bar and a counter for conversation make different evenings behind neighbouring signs. Start with one that interests you and give it time. Many are tiny, but some combine several units; there is no single room size or admission system.

Walking bands are computed by FOW on the OpenStreetMap surface street network at 80 m/min and drawn as a smoothed approximate area around the streets reached. They ignore exit positions, station interiors, underground passages, signals, slopes and routes inside buildings — not directions; follow on-site signs.

A drink and a jukebox at Kouro
Kouro on G-1 Street introduces a 1959 American Rock-Ola jukebox, giving record listeners a concrete reason to choose the room. Its April 2024 menu lists an ¥800 cover and ¥700 standard highballs, shochu, whisky and simple cocktails: one drink totals ¥1,500, or two ¥2,200. A ¥1,000 medium bottled beer makes ¥1,800 with the cover. Confirm current prices; these are one bar’s dated figures.
Find the right door
Kouro’s posted first-visit instructions ask you to phone for a seat and directions. Its sign names both ground-floor Shintei and Kouro; Kouro is upstairs via the rear entrance. Golden Gai is not a row of interchangeable doors. Another choice, Albatross G, is at 1-1-7 Kabukicho on Fifth Street and lists daily hours of 19:00–05:00. The Albatross in Omoide Yokocho is a separate branch. Establish the cover-plus-drink total before ordering at whichever room you choose.
The lanes are part of the neighbourhood
The lanes are private land managed by two associations, and photography requires permission. The associations also prohibit street smoking, taking glasses outside, drinking while walking and obstructing the lanes. Some bars are members-only or do not take first-time visitors. Move in a small party and read the door notice before entering; the short lane walk and time inside one room are different parts of the visit.
