Omoide Yokocho
A dining lane shaped by postwar stalls, where Gifuya’s fried rice and dumplings and Kabuto’s eel-part skewers make very different meals.
Visit fitPeople who enjoy eating shoulder to shoulder
Started as black-market stalls after the war; about 80 businesses — some 60 of them eateries — share about 2,080 m². Offal grills became its food because offal was not rationed.
Charcoal skewers and a bowl of noodles offer different meals. Notice the distance to the kitchen and the rhythm of ordering.

Omoide Yokocho grew from postwar stalls and small eateries. Grilled offal became a defining food when other supplies were restricted; maintained sauces and individual recipes still distinguish the shops. The narrow passage and seats beside cooking areas remain working dining spaces. If you want a meal, choose by food before choosing a doorway. The lane does not have one shared skewer menu or ordering system.

Walking bands are computed by FOW on the OpenStreetMap surface street network at 80 m/min and drawn as a smoothed approximate area around the streets reached. They ignore exit positions, station interiors, underground passages, signals, slopes and routes inside buildings — not directions; follow on-site signs.

Fried rice and dumplings at Gifuya
Gifuya serves ramen and Chinese stir-fries. The district’s October 2025 menu lists gyoza at ¥450, wood-ear-and-egg stir-fry at ¥700 and fried rice at ¥700. Fried rice plus dumplings gives one diner an actual-menu food subtotal of ¥1,150. Add a shared stir-fry if egg and wood-ear mushrooms appeal. Ramen comes in miso, soy, salt and very hot versions. Its listed capacity of 55 also differs from the assumption that every shop has only a few seats. Bring cash. These are dated food prices; check the current display and any additional conditions before ordering.
Eel by the part at Kabuto
Kabuto, founded in 1948, grills eel heads, dorsal and belly fins, liver and tail over binchotan. It makes a meal from the fish’s separate parts, rather than one fillet over rice. The district’s 2021 account describes a basic hitotoori sequence of different skewers and a three-drink limit. Choose the skewer sequence and drinks and confirm the total before ordering; it is a different plan from a simple fried-rice meal.
Before sitting down
Check covers, required drinks, payment and whether your party can sit together before settling in. Many Nakadori shops use shared toilets rather than facilities inside. Bring cash and keep bags out of the passage. Street smoking is prohibited in this lane, which suffered a major fire in 1999. Photographs should not obstruct people eating or working. Allow 45–60 minutes for a meal as a planning estimate, adding any wait separately.
