Shinjuku Station
Reduce Shinjuku Station to your line, your exit gate and the place where you will retrieve your bags. Start with two useful cases: New South for Busta, and the unpaid passage for crossing between east and west.

Guinness lists it as the world’s busiest station (about 2.7 million people a day in 2022). Opened in 1885 and shared by five operators — JR East, Odakyu, Keio, Tokyo Metro and Toei. The New South Gate and Miraina Tower gate (2016) link straight to the bus terminal and NEWoMan.
The operator names and colours over each gate, and the exit numbers. Get into the habit of meeting at a named gate and floor, not “the station”.

Opened in 1885, the station is now an interchange shared by several companies. Within JR alone, Yamanote JY17, Chuo Rapid JC05, Chuo–Sobu Local JB10, Saikyo JA11 and Shonan–Shinjuku JS20 share the station name. For Tokyo Station without a change, take the Tokyo-bound Chuo Rapid. The eastbound Chuo–Sobu Local runs towards Ochanomizu and Chiba; reaching Tokyo Station requires changing, for example to the Tokyo-bound Chuo Rapid at Ochanomizu. Save the operator, line and direction from your journey search, then follow its code and platform number inside the gates. For a meeting, agree on a company and named gate rather than only “Shinjuku Station.”

Where you board and alight
North of Shinjuku Station, about 110 m in a straight line from the station area. The mark is a verified point, not the entrance. The shaded areas are about 5 and 10 minutes on foot from here.
Walking bands are computed by FOW on the OpenStreetMap surface street network at 80 m/min and drawn as a smoothed approximate area around the streets reached. They ignore exit positions, station interiors, underground passages, signals, slopes and routes inside buildings — not directions; follow on-site signs.

From a JR train to an expressway bus
For Busta, aim for JR New South Gate. The escalator in front links to the terminal’s 4F waiting room without crossing Koshu Kaido. JR lists its gate-service window as 05:45–24:00. Outside that window, check the approach via South Exit and the Koshu Kaido crossing. The operator’s estimates of roughly two minutes from New South or four from South Gate cover that connection, rather than the whole trip from your train platform. Add the walk through the station and preparation for boarding. For a lift route, use the JR accessibility map with your actual platform and gate.
Crossing the station without taking a train
To move from the Isetan side towards western Shinjuku without a train, find the B 1 east–west public passage. Moving the gates in 2020 created an unpaid connection between the two sides; it is separate from cutting through the paid railway area. Follow the currently open route rather than an old exit number. The passage does not establish a step-free journey to every destination.
Store bags on the side you will return to
If you will leave by expressway bus, one option is the 2F lockers outside New South Gate near Suica Penguin Square. Check the size, price and closing time at the locker. Bags left inside the railway gates must be retrieved from that paid area, making an outside locker a simpler choice when you are leaving by bus. Multiecube offers size-based availability and reservations, though network delays can make the display differ from the actual spaces. Save the location and locker number together with its key or unlocking details.

Before you go
- Hours and fees
- Choose the operator, line and gate first. JR lists the New South gate service window as 05:45–24:00; this is not the operating schedule of the whole station.
- Good to know
- Follow signs for the open approach. If you need to avoid stairs, choose your line and gate, use that operator’s accessibility map and confirm the route with station staff.
- Access
- JR publishes floor maps and barrier-free guidance; other railways publish their own.
