Bunka Gakuen Costume Museum
A costume museum for looking quietly at the form, materials and decoration of exhibited dress, then describing a quality that stays with you.
A museum that reads culture through clothing
This specialist museum opens garments and textile materials used for university education and research to the public. Collection-centred exhibitions introduce Japanese and world cultures through dress. The collection catalogue is not the current gallery checklist: first choose an exhibition whose clothing and subject interest you.

Choose a show, then look
FOW suggests choosing one visible quality of an exhibited garment: its shape, ground material or decoration. Compare the whole form seen at a distance with the impression of the surface at closer range. Work from what is actually visible, without expecting a permanent embroidery display or a making demonstration.
Keep a question without touching
Do not touch objects, cases or stands, or take photographs or video. Mobile phones and ink pens are also prohibited. Within the permitted scope of notes or sketches that do not obstruct others, keep a quality to question later: a fine line, layered color or exposed ground. This is not a visit for handling garments or turning them over to inspect their construction.
Decide before entry
Ordinary hours are weekdays 10:00–16:30 and Saturdays 10:00–15:00, with last entry 30 minutes before closing. General admission is ¥1,000; junior-high, high-school and university students pay ¥500, and elementary-age children and younger enter free. Counter payment is cash only. Sundays, public holidays and exhibition changeovers are among the closures, with show-specific exceptions. Fit the visit to the exhibition calendar and last entry.
A visit that can finish here
Choose it for a day when quiet attention to the visible qualities of dress is welcome. Finish here if viewing is enough. Choose a separate material store only if a question remains about thread, cloth or tools for work at home. Active play asks for a different kind of participation, so agree with companions on the time you want before entering.
