Compare the wood and finish

Compare the base material and finish as well as colour. Negoro exposes black undercoating through a rubbed red top layer, so the pattern differs from one object to another. It gives a different effect from a decorated dark bowl. Kuroeya’s current examples describe a wooden Aizu lacquer bowl and a Yamanaka lacquer tray. Ask about the actual object’s material and cleaning before choosing a size you would use at the table.

Find the current 2F shop

The current shop is on the second floor of Kuroeya Kokubu Building, Nihonbashi 1-2-6. Distinguish it from older descriptions of larger premises or other floors. Hours are weekdays 09:00–18:00, closed Saturday, Sunday and public holidays. If you want a live craft demonstration or making workshop, ask whether one is currently offered before planning around it.

Ask about care before buying

Objects that initially look similar can differ in material, finish and care, so ask about washing, storage and food use before choosing. If making something is the purpose, compare Ozu Washi’s separately arranged papermaking experience instead.
