The weight and buying power of money

Look at an oban gold coin, then try the weight-experience activity; compare the first Bank of Japan notes issued in the Meiji era with the anticounterfeiting technology section. Seeing original objects and using an interactive device are different actions. Accounts of what Wadokaichin or Kaneitsuho could buy put small coins back into everyday life. Choose one question—weight, manufacture or buying power—to direct the visit.

Walking bands are computed by FOW on the OpenStreetMap surface street network at 80 m/min and drawn as a smoothed approximate area around the streets reached. They ignore exit positions, station interiors, underground passages, signals, slopes and routes inside buildings — not directions; follow on-site signs.

Free entry has an early cutoff

Admission is free. Hours are 9:30–16:30 with last entry 16:00, and Mondays are normally closed. Check the calendar for holiday Mondays, New Year and temporary closures. Groups of more than 20 need reservations. Bring your own device and earphones for the English audio guide.

Visit after leaving large bags

Entry includes X-ray and metal-detector inspection, and the operator discourages suitcases and large bags. Around hotel arrival or departure, arrange luggage storage before choosing this visit. Inside, choose a subject to compare by eye, such as the materials or shapes of money. If you want to make something yourself, compare Ozu Washi’s papermaking experience.
