Katane Bakery

A small Nishihara counter bakery worth approaching through its baguette and pain anglais.

Choose through the bread itself—baguette crust or the chew of pain anglais—then decide between a bag to take away and breakfast downstairs.

Visit fitFor a separate morning around Nishihara and Uehara. Reconsider the journey if you only want a quick addition to shopping in Jinnan.

Daisuke and Tomoko Katane opened the bakery in 2002; flour blending and housemade fillings give everyday bread its individual character.

Good to know

The baguette offers a starting point for crust and flour character; pain anglais shifts attention to the chew of a sandwich loaf.

Baguette or pain anglais

Choose at the glass counter and a member of staff will take out the bread for you. Start with a baguette for its crust and wheat flavour, or pain anglais for the firmer chew of a sandwich loaf. A croissant offers buttery layers; breads filled with house-made bean paste or cream provide a sweeter choice.

Daisuke and Tomoko Katane opened the bakery in 2002. In a 2015 Nisshin interview, Daisuke described blending Japanese flours, milling grains including rye and adjusting fermentation. That attention to the dough makes this a useful stop for people who enjoy comparing ordinary breads, rather than choosing mainly by decoration.

Go downstairs for breakfast

The stairs beside the bakery lead to the café Tomoko started in 2007. Buying bread upstairs and getting a table downstairs are separate arrangements. Choose the café to sit with several breads; stay at the counter for something to eat on a walk or carry away.

A July 2026 visit describes Paris Breakfast as a croissant or pain au chocolat, three other breads, butter and jam, a small juice and a drink. The Plus version adds soup or salad. Omelettes, croque-monsieur and tartines provide alternatives when you want something savoury.

Make room for a Nishihara morning

For a sense of budget, the basic café breakfast cost ¥1,000 on a May 2026 visit. A bakery customer’s account published on 3 October records six breads for ¥1,550: two croissant-style pieces, one sweet bun and three crusty breads. One breakfast with a drink and a bag of breads to share are different ways to spend a morning.

The address is 1-7-5 Nishihara, about a ten-minute residential walk from Yoyogi-Uehara or Hatagaya. The bakery opens Wednesday–Saturday, 07:00–15:00, and closes Sunday–Tuesday. The café operator lists Wednesday 07:30–12:00 and Thursday–Saturday 07:30–14:00, closed Sunday–Tuesday. Plan the seated breakfast separately from buying bread upstairs.
