Meikyoku Kissa Lion
An established cafe built around attentive recorded-classical listening through monumental custom speakers.
Visit fitFor listening while refraining from conversation and photography. Choose another cafe if food or conversation is the purpose.
Yanosuke Yamadera founded Lion in 1926; Naoya Yamadera is a present-day operator. A 2023 report documents the roughly three-metre wooden speakers, Fostex units, Denon DP-3000 and recorded-concert sessions at 15:00 and 19:00.
Focus on the room arranged around its large speakers and recorded music. Decide first whether you need a place to talk or time to listen quietly to classical music.

GOOD LUCK TRIP · resized and croppedA café facing the record player’s sound
Established in 1926, Meikyoku Kissa Lion centres its room on an approximately three-metre wooden loudspeaker. A 2023 operator interview identified Fostex units in its custom cabinet and a Denon DP-3000 turntable. White-covered chairs face the speaker beneath a high ceiling. Even the direction of the seats makes this a different proposition from a café arranged for conversation.
The founding Yamadera family still runs Lion. Operator Naoya Yamadera has recommended the front seats upstairs. Recorded concerts of about an hour begin at 15:00 and 19:00; these are record-listening programmes, not live performances. A 2023 report featured Mozart, Beethoven, Massenet and Borodin. Today's works and performers may differ. The operator-supervised guide also says requests and records brought by visitors can be accepted.
WHERE · On foot from here
Which side of the station, and how far
North-east of Shinsen Station, about 350 m in a straight line from the station point. The shaded areas are about 5 and 10 minutes on foot from here.
Walking bands are computed by FOW on the OpenStreetMap surface street network at 80 m/min and drawn as a smoothed approximate area around the streets reached. They ignore exit positions, station interiors, underground passages, signals, slopes and routes inside buildings — not directions; follow on-site signs.

Dark coffee and an hour of listening
Its coffee has an old-fashioned preparation too. In an operator interview, very dark-roasted coffee was boiled in a large pot, left to rest and boiled again. There is no food service: eat beforehand and leave time to listen over a drink. Photography is prohibited, and conversation should not intrude on the music.
The operator-supervised guide updated in March 2026 gives hours of 13:00–20:00, last orders 19:30, no reservations and no credit cards. Bring cash. The operator-supervised guide gives an indicative budget around ¥800, depending on the drink ordered. Find Lion at 2-19-13 Dogenzaka, about seven minutes on foot from Shibuya Station.
