VIRON Shibuya bakery

Pick up a baguette or pastry from the ground-floor bakery before continuing through Shibuya.

Visit fitFor adding a bread purchase to a Shibuya walk. Check separate times and conditions if a brasserie breakfast is the purpose.

Choose by filling: Comté and Échiré butter in fromage-beurre, or ham with 18-month Comté. The 2026 ¥2,200 brasserie breakfast/¥1,760 tartine are separate from downstairs takeaway.

Good to know

Distinguish buying bread on the ground floor from dining upstairs. Choose from the baguettes or pastries actually available that day.

Three ways to try Rétrodor

Start with the plain Baguette Rétrodor if you want to taste the bread itself. Aji no Techo’s February 2026 feature describes a crackly crust, chewy centre and strong aroma. It suits someone who enjoys a crust to bite through, rather than a soft sandwich loaf. Baker Noriaki Ushio’s 2004 interview explains the slow overnight fermentation of low-protein French Rétrodor flour and the adjustment of Japanese soft water with harder French mineral water.

For lunch, fromage-beurre fills that bread with Comté and Échiré butter; jambon-fromage adds Pierre Oteiza ham and Comté Extra aged at least 18 months. For sweetness, choose a croissant or pain au chocolat. Rurubu’s 2025 visit describes buttery, lightly salty croissant layers, crisp outside and chewy within; its pain au chocolat has a moist centre and chocolate that is not overly sweet.

The outside crêpe window cooks after you order. Rétrodor flour, eggs, milk and Échiré butter make a thick, chewy crêpe; sucre-beurre adds butter and sugar. This is a hot, freshly cooked choice, separate from the packaged crêpes in the bakery display.

A bread purchase or a seated breakfast

Upstairs breakfast runs 09:00–11:00. The February 2026 menu gives two choices: ¥1,760 tartine with baguette and Échiré butter, or the ¥2,200 VIRON breakfast with several breads and a drink. Rurubu’s 2025 visit adds a chosen viennoiserie, refillable coffee or a pot of tea, six Mio jams, honey and chocolate cream. The ¥440 difference is worth considering if you want to try several breads rather than concentrate on a baguette.

Breakfast and café service take no reservations. Rurubu describes an 08:00 waiting list on busy weekends and holidays, with first-seating places potentially gone by around 08:30. Waits vary, and joining late can mean missing breakfast. With a fixed train or appointment ahead, a takeaway purchase downstairs is the easier option.

Cash downstairs, separate services

The red-fronted building’s ground floor is takeaway-only, with no seats. Bring yen: its shop listing excludes cards, electronic money and QR payment. The separate upstairs brasserie accepts major cards, with a stated ¥3,000 minimum bill for card use. Lunch and dinner reservations require qualifying main-course orders; breakfast, café and bar visits cannot be reserved.

Find Tsukada Building at 33-8 Udagawacho, about eight minutes from JR Shibuya. The bakery opens 08:00–21:00; upstairs breakfast starts at 09:00. A ¥540 baguette and ¥756 almond-cream croissant give 2025 purchase examples; choose by the day’s display prices. Check which queue you need: bakery counter, exterior crêpe window or upstairs dining. Crêpes are cooked to order and can take longer at weekends.
