From Brazilian boogie to Afrobeat

Marcos Valle’s Sempre makes Face Records’ jazz, soul, funk and Brazilian categories concrete. The 2019 album brings Alex Malheiros’s bass, a horn section including Jesse Sadoc and Armando Marçal’s percussion into disco, samba and jazz-funk. Minha Romã and the title track offer a lively direction beyond a purely quiet-bossa image of Brazilian music.

Taking a rhythmic interest further

Another direction is Seun Kuti & Egypt 80’s Heavier Yet (Lays the Crownless Head). Dey brings in Damian Marley, linking Nigerian Afrobeat with Jamaican reggae; Emi Aluta features Sampa the Great and takes its name from struggle. It suits someone interested in dance rhythms carrying a social message. For the LP edition, check a catalogue identifier such as Record Kicks RKX096.
