Nishihara Itchome Park — THE TOKYO TOILET
See a lantern-like public structure as a neighborhood transition in Nishihara.
Visit fitFor a brief look at public architecture during a Nishihara walk. Respect users of this working public toilet and follow on-site maintenance notices.
A central accessible room and mirrored side cubicles offer a choice of handrail side. Tree silhouettes appear differently through the frosted glass by day and night.
From outside, look at how tree patterns meet the translucent walls. Users' access and privacy take priority over architectural observation.

Takenosuke Sakakura's ANDON TOILET is a frosted-glass building at the edge of a neighbourhood park. Its central accessible cubicle has ostomate facilities and a baby chair; unisex cubicles on either side contain a toilet, urinal and sink, with mirrored arrangements so users can choose their preferred handrail side. A broad approach leaves room for wheelchairs and pushchairs.
The tree pattern changes the building's appearance across the day. TOTO's project account explains that silhouettes visible from inside by daylight appear on the walls at night, turning the facility into a lantern. Sakakura wanted to replace a dark, little-used toilet with something approachable. The narrow park occupies former Keio railway land and also serves as a residential footpath: this is architecture for a daily route, rather than a monumental plaza.
Find it at 1-29-1 Nishihara, near Hatagaya Station on the Keio New Line. Exterior viewing does not require an exhibition ticket; five to ten minutes is an editorial planning allowance. Do not enter a cubicle or wait for users to leave simply to reproduce a photograph. Current lighting and maintenance notices govern what is available.

How far from the station, and which side
East of Hatagaya Station, about 200 m in a straight line from the station point. The mark is a verified point, not the entrance. The shaded areas are about 5 and 10 minutes on foot from here.
Walking bands are computed by FOW on the OpenStreetMap surface street network at 80 m/min and drawn as a smoothed approximate area around the streets reached. They ignore exit positions, station interiors, underground passages, signals, slopes and routes inside buildings — not directions; follow on-site signs.
