The Mass
A gallery of three exhibition spaces and small courtyards; compare how separate approaches change your distance from the art.
Separate entrances change the distance and approach to each display: a useful place to see how architecture shapes the way photographs are viewed.
Visit fitFor an interest in art and architecture, with time for the galleries and approaches between them.
Nobuo Araki’s three rooms have separate entrances and small courtyards. The 2026 Viviane Sassen exhibition used large photographs to explore bodies, colour and geometry within them.
Look at a work from a distance, then move closer to its surface and colour. Compare the direction of approach and viewing distance in the next room.

Nobuo Araki / The Archetype placed three exhibition spaces in one building at The Mass, giving each its own entrance and approach. Gaps and small courtyards beside Cat Street enter the route between rooms; the three spaces can be used differently according to an exhibition's scale.
The 2026 Viviane Sassen exhibition Myriads combined previously unpublished work shown in Japan for the first time with the continuing 'Frau Holle' series. Born in Amsterdam in 1972, Sassen draws on childhood experience in Africa, abstracting bodies, still lifes and landscapes through colour and geometry. Begin with how a body becomes a shape in a large print, then how colours and forms carry across neighbouring photographs.
WHERE · On foot from here
How far from the station, and which side
South-east of Meiji-jingumae 'Harajuku' Station, about 200 m in a straight line from the station point. The position is the official address point and may differ from the entrance. The shaded areas are about 5 and 10 minutes on foot from here.
Walking bands are computed by FOW on the OpenStreetMap surface street network at 80 m/min and drawn as a smoothed approximate area around the streets reached. They ignore exit positions, station interiors, underground passages, signals, slopes and routes inside buildings — not directions; follow on-site signs.

Move between the rooms
Move from a longer view of one print to its surface and colour at close range, then carry that comparison into the next room. Allowing 30–45 minutes, including the approaches between rooms, is this guide's estimate rather than a fixed viewing time.
The address is 5-11-1 Jingumae: approximately three minutes from Meiji-jingumae Exit 7, five from Omotesando A1 and seven from Harajuku’s east exit. Check the exhibition’s public hours, admission and photography terms. Enquire if step-free access or assistance is needed.
