Yoyogi-Hachiman — THE TOKYO TOILET

Observe Toyo Ito's three mushroom forms at the wooded shrine edge.

Visit fitFor combining Yoyogi Hachimangu with public architecture. Give facility users priority on the paths.

Gaps beneath three roofs admit daylight; circular tiles form colour gradients. Connected paths avoid dead ends, with facilities for parents, children and older users distributed into the men's and women's rooms.

Good to know

Compare the paths between the three structures with the forest-like roofs. Toyo Ito's account emphasises circulation without dead ends as well as form.

Three roofs at the shrine steps

Toyo Ito's Three Mushrooms stands where Yamate-dori meets the steps to Yoyogi Hachimangu. Three rounded roofs sit apart, backed by the shrine's trees. Small circular tiles create colour gradients, while gaps beneath the apparently floating roofs bring in daylight. From the pavement, look first at the roofs against the woodland; at closer range, the tile colours become clearer.

Separating the buildings creates connected paths without dead ends. Ito also distributed functions for older people and parents with children into the men's and women's toilets instead of confining them to one accessible room. Follow the signs to the facility you need. The shrine and public toilet are separate destinations.

The address is 5-1-2 Yoyogi. A five-to-ten-minute exterior stop before or after the shrine is a planning suggestion, not a prescribed visit. Keep circulation clear. Nearby Shigeru Ban's glass scheme was designed to change the boundary when locked; Ito instead leaves gaps between solid structures so that paths and views continue through the site.

Walking bands are computed by FOW on the OpenStreetMap surface street network at 80 m/min and drawn as a smoothed approximate area around the streets reached. They ignore exit positions, station interiors, underground passages, signals, slopes and routes inside buildings — not directions; follow on-site signs.
