A publisher’s books beside their originals

Pearl is the Nishihara bookshop/gallery of small art publisher 888books, which has linked exhibitions to publications by Philippe Weisbecker and Yuichi Yokoyama. A first book is Weisbecker's HAND TOOLS: drawings made in old notebooks after interviewing craftspeople during four months in Kyoto in 2002. The expanded edition has 64 colour pages, a long 370 × 146mm format, saddle stitching and tape along the spine; the publisher's online price is ¥2,750.

Yokoyama's Neutre gathers colour paintings, drawings and collages from 1992 through the 2010s. Its French/English, 96-page edition uses neon four-colour printing, codex binding and a double-sided jacket, 240 × 170mm; signed copies are listed at ¥5,500. Together the online item total is ¥8,250 before shipping, without establishing gallery stock. Tools on a narrow page or a manga artist's painting/collage practice give different reasons to choose.

They ignore exit positions, station interiors, underground passages, signals, slopes and routes inside buildings — not directions; follow on-site signs.

A picture book read from two directions

Aamu and Ilta by Toshiyuki Fukuda and Finland's Anne Vasko is a 54-page colour picture book read from opposite ends, ¥2,750. A young girl receives things and grows on her journey towards a tree; an old bear gives possessions away, becoming lighter. Their journeys meet at the centre. The publisher describes Vasko’s partial collage and Fukuda’s colour adjustments from original to print, offering another way to compare artwork and its printed form.

Pearl opens only during exhibitions. It is Pearl Mansion 102, 2-26-5 Nishihara, behind the PADDLERS COFFEE terrace; publisher directions give five minutes from Hatagaya or ten from Yoyogi-Uehara. Use the official exhibition dates and visitor information before planning the visit; café opening is separate from gallery access.
