Haru-no-Ogawa Playpark

Choose child-directed outdoor play with earth, water and wood, supported by on-site play leaders.

Visit fitFor families willing to allow time for outdoor play and muddy or wet clothes. Check weather and activity closures and bring a change.

Water, earth, ropes, woodworking and the hearth support child-led play, with daily inspections by play leaders. Outside staffed hours it remains an ordinary park. Bring snacks, towels, nappies, spare clothes and bags for wet items.

Good to know

Follow what a child wants to make with earth, water and wood rather than a sequence of fixed equipment. Play leaders support play; this is not a drop-off childcare service.

Play made from earth, water, tools and fire

Haru-no-Ogawa Playpark is a small earth-and-tree playground beside Yoyogi Park. The operator describes water, fire and woodworking tools and ropes as materials for free play; its photographs show a large water tub, bubbles and adults sitting beneath trees. Children can change what they make with soil, water or timber rather than complete an equipment circuit. Water play, tools and the hearth depend on season and weather.

Play leaders shape the space, inspect it daily, respond to injuries and help newcomers connect with other children. The local 'Shibuya Playgrounds' civic group runs it under a ward commission since 2004, with staff, residents and users contributing. Bring time to watch a child's play; it is neither a fixed class nor drop-off childcare.

They ignore exit positions, station interiors, underground passages, signals, slopes and routes inside buildings — not directions; follow on-site signs.

A free visit with spare clothes

Use is free, without residence/age restrictions, booking, reception or registration. The address is 5-68-1 Yoyogi, inside Haru-no-Ogawa Community Park. Yoyogi-koen Exit 3 has an upward escalator and Exit 4 a lift, each about five minutes away; Yoyogi-Hachiman is also about five minutes. Staffed hours are 10:00–17:00, with no staffed play on Thursdays or seasonal summer/winter breaks; the grounds remain an ordinary park outside those hours.

Tents/tarps support ordinary rainy days, but strong wind can prevent hearth and woodworking use. Shops are some distance away, so bring snacks, towels and nappies as needed, plus spare clothes/shoes and bags for wet things. Nursing/changing space is provided, with toilets at the neighbouring ground; take rubbish home. Allowing 45–90 minutes is this guide's family-planning estimate, and an absorbed child may make the next coffee stop expendable.
