Jingu-Dori Park — THE TOKYO TOILET

Observe wind, light and circulation through Tadao Ando's circular louvered public structure.

Visit fitFor a brief reading of Tadao Ando's spatial design in central Shibuya. Keep the working facility's circulation clear.

North and south entrances pass through the louvered circle, with sinks along the passages. The station-side accessible room has ostomate equipment, a baby chair and changing table.

Good to know

Look at how light and air pass through the circular canopy and vertical louvers. Consider the relationship between moving through and pausing in the park, rather than one decorative detail.

The passage beneath the circular roof

Tadao Ando's AMAYADORI takes its name from sheltering from rain. A broad roof extends beyond a circular wall of vertical louvers, leaving an engawa-like edge. North and south entrances keep it from becoming a closed cylinder. Approaching from Shibuya Station brings you to the south side; a side view makes the projecting eaves especially clear. Openings between the louvers and entrances admit light and air.

Sinks sit along the passages to the men's and women's toilets. The accessible room occupies the centre of the station-side entrance, with ostomate equipment, a baby chair and changing table; a men's cubicle also has a baby chair. The location guide includes Braille. These practical facilities sit inside a roof whose edges also make room for a brief public pause.

Find it in Jingu-Dori Park at 6-22-8 Jingumae. Five to ten minutes is an exterior-viewing allowance for a walk between Shibuya and Harajuku, with no exhibition ticket required. Keep the through-route open. Unlike Kuma's five separate huts in Shoto Park, Ando gathers the functions under one circular canopy.

Walking bands are computed by FOW on the OpenStreetMap surface street network at 80 m/min and drawn as a smoothed approximate area around the streets reached. They ignore exit positions, station interiors, underground passages, signals, slopes and routes inside buildings — not directions; follow on-site signs.
