Haru-no-Ogawa Community Park — THE TOKYO TOILET

Shigeru Ban’s park toilet uses coloured glass and locking to address checking before entry and privacy during use.

Ban asks one glass wall to allow checking while vacant and privacy in use. Compared with Ito’s three separate structures, it is another way to make a boundary.

Glass, cleanliness and privacy

Shigeru Ban began with two uncertainties about a park toilet: whether it is clean and whether somebody is inside. His design uses glass intended to be transparent when vacant and opaque when locked around separate men's, women's and multipurpose facilities. The latter includes ostomate equipment. The wall is meant to allow checking before entry and privacy during use.

The design photographs do not establish its condition on your visit. Do not plan around seeing the glass transparent; follow the current on-site notices. The coloured glass and simple boxes beside the park path remain the exterior features; do not test a cubicle's lock just to see the effect.

This is a working public toilet at 5-68-1 Yoyogi. A short exterior look can accompany a park walk. The nearby Haru-no-Ogawa Playpark is a separate staffed facility with its own hours and Thursday/seasonal closures: access to the toilet does not establish that the playpark is open.

Walking bands are computed by FOW on the OpenStreetMap surface street network at 80 m/min and drawn as a smoothed approximate area around the streets reached. They ignore exit positions, station interiors, underground passages, signals, slopes and routes inside buildings — not directions; follow on-site signs.
