Jingumae — THE TOKYO TOILET
Read a street-culture designer's small house-like public architecture in Harajuku.
Visit fitFor connecting Harajuku's fashion culture with small-scale architecture. An exterior observation is sufficient; interior photography is not the purpose.
White walls and blue-green doors/windows surround naturally lit wash areas, ceiling fans and ostomate facilities. Harajuku- and Kitasando-side pavement views reveal different faces of the house.
Notice the scale of the white-walled house among taller buildings. Consider how NIGO's idea of a familiar old home relates to the surrounding street.

NIGO's THE HOUSE is a working public toilet at 1-3-14 Jingumae. The streetwear designer chose the scale of an old home: white walls, blue-green doors and window frames, and a low outline against taller buildings. His stated intention is a familiar house that may feel nostalgic to one generation and new to another.
Official photographs show naturally lit washing areas, ceiling fans in the men's and women's booths, and entrances for men's and accessible facilities. The accessible room has ostomate equipment. The domestic exterior contains practical provisions for different users. Views from the Harajuku and Kitasando sides of Meiji-dori reveal different faces of the house; stay on safe pedestrian space and do not peer into occupied facilities.
Five to ten minutes is a planning allowance for an exterior stop during a Harajuku walk. There is no exhibition interior to explore. Where Ando's circular Jingu-Dori structure makes a sheltered passage, NIGO uses recognisable doors and windows to give a public facility a domestic face.
WHERE · On foot from here
How far from the station, and which side
East of Harajuku Station, about 500 m in a straight line from the station area. The mark is a verified point, not the entrance. The shaded areas are about 5 and 10 minutes on foot from here.
Walking bands are computed by FOW on the OpenStreetMap surface street network at 80 m/min and drawn as a smoothed approximate area around the streets reached. They ignore exit positions, station interiors, underground passages, signals, slopes and routes inside buildings — not directions; follow on-site signs.
